God’s Masterpiece
Introduction: Ephesians 2:10 tells us that those who belong to God are His workmanship. What does it mean to be God’s workmanship? What are the implications for our lives? Let’s take this verse one phrase at a time to see what it is saying:
We are His workmanship...
“Workmanship” in the original Greek is the word “poiema,” which speaks of God’s creation. When God first made His creation in all its breathtaking views, He said it was good. Even more amazing and wonderful is that all humans possess the imago Dei; we are made in the image of God, each with an eternal soul. Man is the pinnacle of God’s creation, yet man is not His masterpiece. According to this text, God’s masterpiece is the man or woman, boy or girl, who was once dead in sins and has now been made alive in Christ. We are now twice created by Him! If you have given your life to Jesus, you are His masterpiece.
Lord, thank You that You have made us new! Please help us realize and rejoice that You have given our lives value because we are Your workmanship, Your masterpiece!
Created in Christ Jesus for good works...
We are not saved by good works, but we are saved for good works. We are saved wholly and only by the grace of God through Christ Jesus, and then we respond joyfully in good works. As God’s workmanship, we do good works and people see our lives and glorify our Father!
Lord, thank You that as Your new creations we can do good works and bring You glory!
Which God prepared beforehand...
Those whom God has made new will have works prepared even this day and this week to do. Our confidence is not in ourselves, but in God who has gone ahead of us and prepared the good works we’ve been given to do.
Is it no sacrifice, then, to live the Christian life? Yes, it is; we present our bodies as a living sacrifice. We will know hardship and suffering, but also great purpose and great joy because we are His workmanship doing good works that He has prepared for us to do.
Lord, please lead us to get up each day presenting ourselves to You to do the good works You have given us to do this day.
That we should walk in them.
See how we all once walked being controlled by the world and the devil (Ephesians 2:2), but now we walk in a new life in Christ to do good works that glorify Him because of what He has done for us. This is the good news that describes our life change:
-
God rules: He created everything, including you and me.
-
We sinned: Sin separates us from God, and if we die in our sin we will be separated forever.
-
God provided: The good news is, His Son Jesus is the perfect solution to the problem of sin.
-
Jesus gives: He died and rose again, and we can now be welcomed into His family forever.
-
We respond: If you are not now a part of His workmanship, will you trust and follow Him?
Lord, by Your saving grace, please enable every person who comes to this church to give his or her life to You and become Your masterpiece.
