Passage: Isaiah 9:6–7

Prayer for All Members Based on Pastor Jared’s Message, December 11, 2022 Isaiah 9:6-7
Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace

Introduction (9:1-5): What is Christmas really about? It is about the light of Jesus Christ breaking through the dark. The Coming Light (1-3) The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light...

The people of Israel were not trusting or following God, so they were walking in darkness, and facing a coming judgment. But there was hope, hope expressed by Isaiah in the past tense because the promise of God is as certain as if already accomplished. God is always good to His Word. Light was coming and it would give the people joy. That same light is our hope today; we realize it is a person named Jesus. Christmas comforts us with the good news that God has provided a Light to drive out the darkness.

Father, thank You for Jesus, the Light of Christmas! Please help us experience comfort and joy in Him.

The Coming Warrior (4-5) ...the rod of his oppressor you have broken...

How is the rescue of Israel to take place? Verses 4-5 speak of a Warrior-King, but then verse 6 tells us of a child being born for us. God’s provision for us in our sin, in our fear, and in our hopelessness, is a child. God’s answer is Jesus. His birth was for the salvation of the nation and of the world.

Father, thank You for Jesus, our Warrior-King! Thank You for His birth for us, to come and save us.

The Coming Ruler (6-7) For to us a child is born... and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

The child that was to be born has strong shoulders: He can carry anything that is put on Him, from the cross of Calvary to the everlasting government of righteousness and justice and peace. He is described in a marvelous way through four names:

  1. Wonderful Counselor – This name refers to the supernatural wisdom that Jesus possesses. We can build our lives on His wonderful counsel.

  2. Mighty God – The little baby born in a manger is God Almighty, God in the flesh. Only God could live a sinless life, only God could rise again, only God could accomplish for us what we need.

  3. Everlasting Father – The attributes of God’s rule are given to Jesus; He is the Ruler-Father of His people, ruling in righteousness and justice forever.

  4. Prince of Peace – Jesus brings peace to His people, peace with God and peace with others.

Lord Jesus, Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, and Prince of Peace, we praise You and adore You for Your divine wisdom and power and righteousness and justice and peace!

Conclusion: The focus of our faith is the person Jesus, who was born for us.

When you celebrate Christmas, I pray you will see the miracle of grace and hope, the Light in the darkness. The greatest Christmas gift is not one under the tree, but the One who hung on the tree. The Light has come. Jesus is your Savior. Behold your Light.

  • He is our Wonderful Counselor – So, listen to Him and His Word.

  • He is our Mighty God who defeats our enemies with ease – So, rejoice in Him.

  • He is our Everlasting Father who loves us – So, enjoy relationship with Him.

  • He is our Prince of Peace – So, anticipate His everlasting harmony. If you need peace, look to Jesus.

If you do not know Jesus, God in the flesh, admit you are a sinner and give your life to Him; He will save you.

Lord, please help us to listen to Your Word, to rejoice in You, to enjoy Your love, and to receive Your peace. Help us to know that we know that we know that we will spend eternity with You in heaven.
